INDIAN ROCKS BEACH, Fla. — Teammates, coaches and parents gathered Saturday morning to remember Sophie Delott, who was killed hours earlier by a suspected drunk driver.
Deputies said Delott was riding her bicycle, which had front and rear lights, in the bike lane of the Indian Rocks Causeway Bridge around 10:30 p.m. Friday. Neil Singhal, 69, swerved into the lane and hit and killed Delott, according to deputies. Singhal was charged with DUI Manslaughter.
Delott was the only girl on the Seminole High School football team. Her teammates met Saturday morning in the locker room to grieve together.
Delott’s coach said she was quiet, but dedicated to her sport and to her country. Coach Chris Miller said Delott also recently joined the Marines and was designated as the leader of all the new recruits going through boot camp.
“I hope everybody just remembers her as exactly who she was, which is a selfless, humble, hard-working, dedicated young lady who was taken from us way too soon,” Miller said. “There's just no other way to put it.”
