TAMPA, Florida -- City council unanimously agreed Thursday to order a staff analysis of Tampa's red light camera program following a 10 Investigates story that raised new questions about the program's effectiveness and the city's transparency.
Councilwoman Yvonne Yolie Capin called for an extensive review of the program, including rear-end collisions, which 10 Investigates reported may be on the rise at Tampa red light camera (RLC) intersections. She also asked for an update on the status of the city's contract, which is up for renewal next April.
Wednesday night, 10 Investigates also reported how Tampa had not pulled crash stats in 21 months, even though state law requires crash data reporting every year. But statistics analyzed for this series indicated there was no noticeable overall drop in crashes at RLC intersections.
The city also missed an opportunity to renegotiate its contract and lower its fees in 2014 when its first contract expired.
