TAMPA, Fla. — A man accused of shooting another man who jumped in to stop an assault has been arrested.

Edward Nieves, 43, was arrested Monday at Orlando International Airport after returning from Puerto Rico, police said.

About 2 a.m. Feb. 2, the victim saw a man assaulting a woman inside a red pickup in the parking lot of a Tampa convenience store, police said. The victim intervened, and the man tried to punch him but missed.

The victim punched the suspect in self-defense, police said. The suspect then got a gun from the truck and shot the victim in the left shoulder.

The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators identified the suspect as Nieves, police said, and learned he had gone to Puerto Rico. They waited at the airport for him to arrive.

When he is returned from Orlando, he will face charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, police said.
