Gulfport, Florida - There was a surprise send off Saturday afternoon for a long-time Pinellas County firefighter. Hundreds of people showed up at Salty's Gulfport Bar for a surprise party for Lt. Pete Huffman. Friends call him "The Legend."

After nine-and-a-half years with Gulfport Fire Rescue and nearly 35 years as a firefighter in Pinellas County, Lieutenant Huffman is ending his career a year short of retirement.
He's stepping down after being diagnosed with stage four colon cancer.

Huffman tells 10 News, "One thing about the fire service is we have a tremendous amount of camaraderie amongst us and we come together on special occasions. And this just happens to be my special day. I'm overwhelmed by the response. It's just the coolest thing ever."

Huffman's fellow firefighters arranged everything for the party on their own time and with their own money.
