ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — Thursday marked 365 days since the beginning of Florida’s so-called “SunPass Saga.” It was June 6th, 2018, when the maintenance began that would ultimately cause the saga to unfold.
10Investigates learned in the following days that the state had chosen not to run its old system in parallel with its new system. That meant that when the new system wasn’t functioning properly, there was no working backup system to fall back on.
An FDOT spokesperson said the agency made the calculated decision not to “rollback” to the old system, and instead force forward with the new one.
In the 12 months since, the state has paid millions of dollars, processed millions of backed-up toll transactions and launched an inspector general investigation into the matter.
