The Health, Energy, Resilience, and Sustainability (HERS) Committee met to discuss if city residents are okay with paying for plastic or paper bags. In about 45 minutes of discussion, city leaders also discussed how retailers would need to prepare if the proposal moves forward.

The committee decided to continue its discussion for the proposed ordinance during its meeting on Jan. 10, 2019.

The proposed ordinance has yet to advance to the city council floor.

Due to environmental concerns, several U.S. cities have outright banned plastic bags. Other cities charge customers extra to use plastic or paper bags.
