WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) - A central Florida Sheriff's deputy was shot in the ankle by a suspect who also was shot in an exchange of fire at a busy intersection.

Seminole County Chief Deputy Sheriff Dennis Lemma said Thursday the deputy is expected to survive.

Lemma says deputies had been pursuing Christian Joy, 21, and a female passenger in a car that matched one believed to be involved in a series of home burglaries.

When the vehicle crashed into another vehicle at the busy intersection, Joy and passenger got out of the vehicle.

According to WKMG, the two suspects got out of the vehicle and that's when Joy allegedly shot Seminole County Deputy Sheriff Brian Mahan in the ankle, SCSO said. Deputies then returned fire, hitting Joy, who is listed in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

His passenger also was arrested.

Joy is being investigated for attempted homicide.
