ORLANDO, Fla. — A "frightening" situation where a man reportedly threatened a bus driver on the University of Central Florida campus caused the school to briefly go into lockdown, campus police said Thursday.
It happened around 8 p.m. Thursday at the Lynx station near Garage A after UCF Police said officers got a 911 call from a bus driver reporting a "belligerent" man threatened him with a gun.
Police said they issued an emergency alert across the campus warning about an armed suspect. A shelter-in-place order was set and dispatchers placed the main UCF campus on lockdown, ensuring all campus buildings were on "access control."
Campus police said with the help of patrolling the campus and looking at surveillance camera footage, officers were able to locate the suspected armed man. He was taken into custody to be interviewed by police. UCF Police said they found a weapon and added no shots were fired.
Charges are reportedly pending. Police have not released the man's identity at this time.
"We recognize that this was a frightening situation and understand this incident has impacted members of our campus community," campus police said in part on Facebook. "UCF resources are available to students, faculty, and staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."
UCF Police said people interested in an "open sharing space for conversation" with authorities were able to do so between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday on campus.
"Never be afraid to reach out for help," campus police said in closing. "That’s what we’re here for."
