CUDJOE KEY, Fla. — The main highway through the Florida Keys became the scene of a deadly accident when a semitruck flipped onto its side and caught fire.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened early Tuesday morning, shortly before 5 a.m. Very little additional information was provided beyond the fact that one person was killed in the crash.
The burning wreckage of the truck lay across both lanes, rendering the passage of traffic impossible. Both the northbound and southbound lanes of US 1 were closed until around 8 a.m., when the MCSO reported some traffic movement but warned commuters to expect major delays in the area.
Photos and video provided by the MCSO showed deputies, fire rescue workers, and the Florida Highway Patrol on the scene and the truck fully engulfed in massive flames and smoke.
Monroe County officials said there would be no trash or recycling service from mile marker 21 to the 7 Mile Bridge due to the crash.
