Timeline of deadly Saturday shooting in Tallahassee

The Leon County Sheriff's Office releases what happened Saturday morning in a shootout that claimed the life of a deputy

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Authorities have released the name of a gunman who went on a shooting rampage in a Tallahassee neighborhood, killing an officer and injuring another.

In an emotional press conference, Leon County Sheriff's spokesman James McQuaig explained what happened Saturday morning. He released a timeline of the events:

- 10:15 a.m. Call dispatched about a house fire in the Plantation Woods neighborhood of northwest Tallahassee.

- 10:22 a.m. Deputy Sheriff Christopher L. Smith and Deputy Sheriff Colin Welfekuhl arrive on scene simultaneously in different vehicles. Almost immediately deputies went under attack from armed suspect, 53-year-old Curtis Wade Holley.

- 10:24 a.m. The words officer down are radioed for the first time. Deputy Smith is shot multiple times.

- 10:25 a.m. - Deputies and first responders are saying that they are actively engaged in a gun battle. Tallahassee police officers Mark Lewis and Scott Angulo arrive on scene to help. Officer Lewis attempts to render aid to Deputy Smith and is immediately fired upon.

- 10:32 a.m. The words TFD (Tallahassee Fire Department) are being shot at are reported. At this time, Deputy Welfekuhl is exchanging fire with the suspect. He maintains a field of gun fire with suspect while telling firefighters to clear the area and evacuate. He didn't "displace" fire until firefighters were evacuated.

- 10:33 a.m. Suspect is still shooting and heading north on Caracus Court. At this time, Deputy Welfekuhl and Officer Angulo have paired up and are working together, engaged in gun fire with the suspect. Angulo shoots and kills the suspect.

- 10:34 a.m. Almost 12 minutes later after the incident began, suspect is considered down.

McQuaig said Deputy Smith, 47, was a loving husband and father. He worked with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office from 1991 to 2009 as a correctional officer and deputy. He joined the Leon County Sheriff's Office in 2009 in the uniform patrol bureau.
