MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A 13-year-old boy is dead after police say he was shot in the head while he was in a home with other children Saturday night in South Florida.
At around 7:39 p.m., several children at a home on Northwest 207th Street and 37th Avenue were inside a bedroom playing video games when someone had a gun, the Miami Gardens Police Department told CBS Miami.
According to WTVJ-TV, at some point, the gun was fired and struck the teen in the back of his head.
The boy was reportedly airlifted to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition but later died due to his injuries.
“A lot of people do have firearms these days and it’s up to us to ensure that if we’re going to have firearms in our home, to keep them locked up and make sure they stay away from the reach of kids,” Miami Gardens Police Sergeant Emmanuel Jeanty told WTVJ-TV.
During the time of the incident, there was an adult in the home, CBS Miami reports. So far, no arrests have been made.
Investigators are still working to determine how the gun got into the hands of one of the children.
