BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Scott Israel, the Broward County sheriff suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis, is taking steps to get his job back at the polls.
Israel filed the paperwork to run in the 2020 Democratic primary for sheriff Monday, according to the Sun-Sentinel. The newspaper said the filing allows him to raise and spend campaign money, but candidates don't qualify officially until June.
DeSantis suspended Israel in January, saying at the time, "Sheriff Israel has repeatedly failed and has demonstrated a pattern of poor leadership. He failed to protect Floridians and visitors during the tragic Fort Lauderdale International Airport shooting in 2017. He failed in his duties to keep our families and children safe during the devastating shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018. These incidents demonstrate Sheriff's Israel's repeated incompetence and neglect of duty."
Israel has been urging the state Senate to overturn the suspension.
