FLORIDA, USA — While Florida is known by many for its beautiful beaches and thrilling theme parks, a recent study finds it may not be the safest place to enjoy all those activities.
According to a new study from WalletHub, the Sunshine State falls within the bottom five of safest states in America, coming in at No. 46 overall.
The study broke data down with an overall score, personal & residential safety rank, financial safety rank, road safety rank, workplace safety rank and emergency preparedness rank.
This is what Florida received in all of those categories:
- Total score: 37.66
- Personal & residential safety rank: 35
- Financial safety rank: 44
- Road safety rank: 41
- Workplace safety rank: 43
- Emergency preparedness rank: 47
The results were based on 52 key safety indicators, including assaults per capita, total loss amount from climate disasters and the unemployment rate.
“The safest states in America protect their residents from harm in a multitude of different ways, from keeping crime rates low and maintaining safe roadways to having strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations," WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said in a statement. "They have high levels of occupational safety and disaster preparedness, too. In addition, states are made safer by efforts that individual residents take, such as forming a neighborhood watch or working in firefighting and EMT jobs at high rates.”
Falling behind Florida on the list is Arkansas (47), Texas (48), Mississippi (49) and Louisiana (50).
