FHP: Car runs stop sign, crashes into bus with 14 students on board in Sumter County

Fourteen middle and high school students on the school bus were all released to their parents after the crash, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — A serious crash between a Sumter County school bus and a car on County Road 222 sent each driver to the hospital Friday morning, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The crash happened around 8:35 a.m., according to FHP. A 68-year-old Bushnell woman was reportedly driving east on CR-222 in a Ford Escort Wagon while the school bus driver, a 50-year-old woman from Wildwood, was traveling south on CR-223.

The driver of the Ford failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the path of the school bus before being hit, according to FHP. Fourteen middle and high school students were aboard the school bus at the time of the crash and were all released to their parents.

Both the bus driver and 68-year-old woman were sent to the hospital "for serious and minor injuries respectively," FHP said.
