OCALA, Fla. — An Ocala man was arrested after leaving the scene of a crash involving three cars that sent a man to the hospital with serious injuries almost two weeks ago.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 18, a Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Corvette were speeding west down State Road 200, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles explained in a news release.
The two cars were reportedly making "multiple lane changes" and "driving recklessly for the purpose of racing."
But while driving in the area of SW 80th Street, the Corvette hit a Toyota Prius that was also traveling in the same direction.
The luxury car ended up steering off the roadway before slamming into a utility pole and a tree, according to the FDHSMV. The Prius stayed in the median.
After the crash, the driver of the Mustang briefly parked, reportedly hiding his car in the parking lot of a local business. The agency explains the driver checked on the driver of the Corvette, who had been ejected, before leaving the scene.
The driver of the Corvette, a 38-year-old man from Ocala, was left with serious injuries.
When the crash initially happened, the Florida Highway Patrol released images of the Mustang driver to the public to get help identifying him. And it worked – 23-year-old Jacob Carmack of Ocala was arrested on Tuesday and booked into Marion County Jail.
He's now facing charges of reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury to another, crash involving death or personal injuries for failure to remain on scene of crash and racing on highways.
There's an ongoing investigation into the incident.
