Suspect in custody after Melbourne apartment shooting

The suspect was shot "multiple times" after firing at law enforcement, police said.

Melbourne police officers responded to what they said was an "active shooter situation" Wednesday morning at an apartment complex.

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The alleged gunman who fired upon officers at a central Florida apartment complex is in custody after being shot "multiple times" by police, according to WKMG-TV, citing the Melbourne Police Department.

Officers responded Wednesday morning after a call about a suspicious man at the Pentagon Garden Apartments near Babcock Street and Strawbridge Avenue in Melbourne. 

The gunman reportedly shot at officers, who didn't fire back. The suspect eventually came out of an apartment and continued shooting at law enforcement, WKMG-TV reported.

Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie told the TV station that at least two officers fired, and the gunman was shot "multiple times."

WFTV-TV reported that the suspect, whose name has not yet been released, is in custody.

The agency posted on Facebook that the incident was contained at around 10:30 a.m. and that there was no further threat to public safety.

UPDATE The incident has been contained at this point, however the investigation remains ongoing. While there will still be a law enforcement presence in the area, there is no further threat to public safety.
