VERO BEACH, Fla. — A man is dead after he was hit by a Brightline train while walking on the tracks Monday night in Florida, authorities say.
The collision occurred at around 10 p.m. near Highlands Drive in Indian River County, WPEC-TV reports.
Wesley Ducheneaux, 29, was reportedly walking on the train tracks in a southern direction while the train was headed north going at 110 mph.
The Treasure Coast News reports that the engineer of the train – which was carrying 61 passengers – told the Indian County Sheriff's Office that he activated the emergency stop when he saw Ducheneaux, but the train still hit him.
Deputies found the 29-year-old's body off the tracks, according to WPEC-TV.
None of the passengers on the train were hurt during the incident. The Treasure Coast News says another Brightline train was sent to the area to pick up the travelers and continue their trip.
The investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
This is not the first time in recent weeks a death has been involved in a Brightline train crash.
Two crashes involving the train killed three people at the same railroad crossing on the high-speed train's route between Miami and Orlando.
The crashes happened at a crossing along the U.S. 1 corridor in Melbourne, on Florida's Atlantic coast, where the high-speed train passes through on its daily routes to and from South Florida. Since Brightline launched the 160-mile extension that links South Florida and Orlando in September, there have been five deaths, according to an Associated Press database.
