MIAMI-DADE, Fla. — Florida law enforcement is looking for answers after a human head was found washed up along the state's coast, reports say.
A report from NBC 6 says the head was found just after 8:30 Tuesday morning on Key Biscayne when someone raking the beach discovered it near an apartment at Key Colony.
The outlet spoke to Key Biscayne residents who said they heard helicopters and were initially unsure of what was happening.
“I saw the police but they didn't say, they just said there was an investigation and that you couldn’t walk there," resident Beatrice Huze told the outlet.
Miami-Dade Police Detective Argemis Colome told CBS News that the agency is unsure of the gender or age of the person's head, and that it would be examined by the Medical Examiner's Office.
Miami-Dade Police homicide investigators are also reportedly looking into the discovery.
CBS News spoke to residents and tourists in the area to gauge their reaction after hearing word of the human head on the coast.
"This is shocking, shocking," Marcelo Borrelli, a local Miami resident, said to CBS News. "You don't hear a lot about that. You heard about drugs washing up on shore and things like that, but a head."
"That's pretty scary and crazy," Alex Portuondo, visiting from Denver, told the outlet. "I have never heard of anything like this happening before on this kind of beach. I guess I am curious if they have any information on where it came from, if anything else has been found, if it happened here on the island or washed up on the shore. I guess I assume it might have happened someplace else and washed up here but I do worry because of this."
