FWC hosts semi-annual license-free Freshwater Fishing Weekend on June 8-9

Gone Fishing? This weekend only, introduce family and friends without licenses to your love of freshwater fishing.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is hosting its semi-annual license-free Freshwater Fishing Weekend on June 8-9.

During normal fishing season and throughout the year, freshwater fishing requires specific licenses for fishermen. Twice a year in April and June, however, the FWC opens its waters for those of all ages to get their hands on a fishing pole. Florida residents and visitors of all skill levels and ages are encouraged to participate.

People can fish in fish management areas like community-based fishing lakes and ponds and commission-managed impoundments and state-approved fishing piers, boat ramps and lakes and rivers. All other rules, including bags, fish size limits and seasons still apply.

The FWC provides resources to first-time and experienced fishers to successfully get involved in the events, including how-to's for first-time anglers, what to bring to a fishing event, what species to fish for and fishing sites and forecasts.

In addition to individual fishing, the FWC hosts online competitions through its Big Catch and TrophyCatch programs.

This season, it's hosting a special promotion for pink-tagged bass — fishers can win bonus prizes in Porter Lake, Lake Beauclair, Lake Lochloosa, Lake Okeechobee and NW Winter Haven Chain. The FWC advises all fishers to submit their largemouth bass finds that are over 8 lbs. to TrophyCatch to win prizes.

While there are restrictions and rules for each body of water regarding certain kinds of fish, the TrophyCatch and Big Catch programs aim to get Florida residents to explore and learn about the species of fish in the state's waters.

To continue fishing year-round, the FWC encourages Florida residents between the ages of 16 and 65 to purchase or renew their fishing licenses.
