Report: Florida teen struck by lightning recovering in hospital

The 17-year-old told outlets that he was doing yard work when he was struck and woke up "face down in a puddle."

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — A 17-year-old is reportedly recovering after he was struck by lightning while doing lawn work Monday afternoon.

Daniel Sharkey remembers he was weed-wacking his neighbor's lawn around 5 p.m. in Altamonte Springs and after that, waking up "face down in a puddle," he told WFTV-TV

Sharkey always does his neighbor's lawn work on Mondays and this time was no different. He knew a storm was coming and was rushing to finish when lightning struck. Luckily, a tree absorbed most of the shock, the outlet reported.

The article explains his neighbor called 911 after he was struck and he was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Doctors told WFTV that he's doing "remarkably well" and if the bolt struck just a few inches over, Daniel may not be alive to tell the story.

"I'm just happy that if karma is a thing, it ended up on my side this time," Sharkey told the station.

The teen is an avid volunteer in the community who was featured by WESH-TV for his work with a food bank. He also said once he recovers, he'll be going back to do more yard work because he has people counting on him.

"I mean, I’ve got 20 people that expect their grass cut, and if not there, I’m sure I’ll have a lot of annoyed customers," he told WESH.
