PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — A Florida teen was struck and killed by lightning while riding his bike home from band practice Wednesday in Pembroke Pines, according to media reports.
Sixteen-year-old McArthur High School Student Cameron Day was riding his bike before he stopped in a neighborhood just south of Pines Boulevard, according to a report from CBS Miami.
After a storm rolled through the area, Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue reportedly found the teen in the grass under a tree and not moving. He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, CBS Miami reports.
McArthur High School Principal sent the following message to families and staff after the teen's death, according to a report from ABC-affiliate Local10:
“Dear McArthur High School families and staff, this is Principal Mark Howard calling to inform you about tragic news impacting our school community. An 11th-grade student passed away yesterday evening. Though I am unable to share additional details regarding the student’s untimely death, I offer my deepest condolences to the student’s family and loved ones, teachers, and classmates. He will be missed.”
A GoFundMe page was set up to support Cameron's mother, Lealani Day for her son's funeral expenses.
Organizers of the GoFundMe described Cameron as "a bright light and sweet soul."
"His passion for music, leadership, and unwavering love for his bandmates and band, McArthur's Herd of Sound made him an integral part of our family," organizers stated.
As of Friday, Sept. 20, the GoFundMe has reached $9,405 of its $25,000 goal.
