TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida drivers will get an updated license next time they go to renew.
DMV offices across the state are rolling out the new design throughout the summer.
The new IDs will have the magnetic strip on the back removed and security features added to the front. The data layout will also change.
Florida drivers carrying a license with no gold star in the upper right corner will eventually have to schedule a trip to the DMV for an upgrade.
Just about two years ago, Florida licenses and ID's were given a new look to be more secure. Travelers boarding commercial flights have to have a license that's REAL ID compliant starting October 1, 2020. If their license is not, they’ll need to bring a second form of ID with them.
The new licenses aren’t available online yet, but the state says they will be at the end of August.
A DMV office in Venice was the first to get them in stock. Next week, offices in Hillsborough and Polk counties will have them.
You can find when a DMV near you will have the new license available here.
