LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A road in Central Florida will be renamed in honor of a local soldier who was killed while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
WKMG, the CBS affiliate in Orlando, said Pfc. Derek Arthur Gibson was killed by an improvised explosive device in April 2007. He was only 20 years old.
A dedication ceremony will be held Aug. 2 to officially change a part of County Road 44 between County Road 452 and South Fish Camp Road to Pfc. Derek Arthur Gibson Memorial Highway.
Gibson graduated from Eustis High School in 2004 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2005. He was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, in October 2006.
Gibson was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge, WKMG said.
