ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is proposing a temporary surcharge on customers' bills next year after the state saw back-to-back hurricanes.
The company said the surcharge would last 12 months and help pay for restorations after hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton. It would also help replenish a reserve that was primarily depleted by Hurricane Idalia.
If state regulators approve the proposal, FPL said it would add about $12 to a typical 1,000 kWh residential customer bill starting in January 2025.
Nearly 2.5 million people across Florida reportedly lost power after Hurricane Milton made landfall in October. Since then, utility crews have helped restore power to several communities across the Tampa Bay area.
