A North Miami police officer has been found guilty of culpable negligence in the shooting of an unarmed caretaker in 2016.
The jury, however, found Jonathan Aledda not guilty of two counts of attempted manslaughter, CBS in Miami reports.
The case that made national headlines began when Aledda responded to a call of a possibly suicidal man. He found two men in the street. One was Arnaldo Rios, who has autism, the other his caretaker, Charles Kinsey.
Aledda said he believed it was a hostage situation and that Rios was armed. In reality, he was holding a toy truck.
Aledda fired at Rios, but ended up hitting Kinsey in the leg.
Video of the incident showed Kinsey was lying on the ground with both hands in the air.
The first trial for Aledda ended in a hung jury.
After Monday's verdict, the officer faces up to a year in prison.
