Police: 1 person electrocuted, 4 others hurt near fountain area of Florida shopping center

Fire crews reportedly say several other people might have felt an electrical shock while in the water.

JUPITER, Fla. — One person is dead and four others were left hurt after an "electrocution incident" in the fountain area of a Florida shopping mall.

In a Facebook post, the Jupiter Police Department explains officers responded around 3:40 p.m. on Sunday to Harbourside Place to lend a helping hand to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

Once on scene, five people were reportedly found hurt and were taken to local hospitals.

Three minors, who were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, are still recovering from the incident, police explain. Out of the two adults taken to hospitals – one was released and the other was pronounced dead.

WPEC reports investigators confirmed the adult who died was electrocuted.

Fire crews reportedly say several other people might have felt an electrical shock while in the water.

"Evidently somebody had gone into the water and started having some distress," Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Captain Tom Reyes reportedly said. "Some other people went in and tried to remove them from the water and it appears there may have been an electrocution in the water itself."

The fountain, which does have lights in it, was drained for law enforcement to investigate.

While speaking with people about the incident, WPEC was told things like this have never happened in the nine years of being open.

"To be really honest with you nowadays, nothing surprises me anymore, unfortunately," visitor Jaime Estremera-Fitzgerald told the West Palm Beach-based TV station.
