TAVERNIER, Fla. — The hunt for spiny lobster in the Florida Keys was derailed when one diver found something else — a bundle of cocaine, authorities said.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office posted Wednesday afternoon on Facebook, briefly recounting the events. According to deputies, around 2:15 p.m., the diver was searching for Florida spiny lobsters about one mile offshore of Tavernier when, instead of catching a crustacean, they found a brick-shaped package.
That person contacted authorities as a result.
The agency shared a photo of the suspected cocaine, wrapped in thick tan tape and affixed with a label that read "Bunny" and had a yellow rabbit/fox-like face silhouette and crossbones.
Deputies said the package has since been turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.
July 24-25 is the spiny lobster sport season in Florida. The mini-season happens the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday in July.
The regular Florida spiny lobster season runs from Aug. 6 - March 31. For more information, click or tap here.
