TAMPA, Fla. — Randomly generated numbers will be added to Florida driver's license and identification card numbers to help prevent fraud and increase security.

The numbers are changing to follow legislation that emended a Florida law requiring random numbers to be added to the sequence, according to a news release from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

The department said a different formula using randomization will now be used to come up with the numbers associated with the ID card. Customers renewing or replacing their cards will be issued a new number starting July 31.

The goal of these new four randomly-generated numbers that will be put in is to "safeguard individuals' identities."

"Once the new number has been issued, it will only change again if the customer’s last name changes," the release reads in part. "Any new credential, printed report or receipt will display the newly generated driver license or identification number."

Residents looking to renew their driver's license or ID card can do so online if they are eligible. Customers must go in person for several reasons:

  • If a customer used the online convenience service on their last renewal.
  • If a customer is not REAL ID compliant.
  • If a customer wishes to update their photo.
  • If the customer changes their name using an original or certified court order or marriage certificate.
  • If a customer wishes to add or remove a designation or has a court order to update their credential.
  • If a customer is getting a Florida driver license or ID card for the first time.
  • If the customer holds a commercial driver license.
  • If the license has the word “TEMPORARY” printed on it.
