ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Donald Trump was the target of what the FBI said “appears to be an attempted assassination” at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, just nine weeks after he survived another attempt on his life at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Florida state leaders, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, reacted on social media to the news. In an X post, the governor said the state would be investigating the attempted assassination.
"The people deserve the truth about the would be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee," DeSantis stated on X.
Florida Senator Rick Scott also posted on social media following the reported gunfire.
"I've reached out to President [Trump] and just spoke with [Palm Beach County Sheriff] Ric Bradshaw about the assassination attempt," Scott wrote. "God bless our law enforcement. The vile rhetoric toward Trump is dangerous and must stop."
In a prior post on X, Scott thanked God that Trump was safe and said that he was grateful for law enforcement's brave response.
Attorney General Ashley Moody called the events Sunday "another despicable attempt on" Trump's life in a post stating that she was "grateful" that the former president was safe. She thanked the "quick action" of law enforcement as well.
In addition to Moody, Florida Rep. Kat Cammack issued a statement saying she was "beyond grateful for President Trump's safety."
"In this country, our exchanges can be passionate and often where we disagree, but we must never resort to political violence," Cammack stated.
Aside from Florida leaders, current U.S. President Joe Biden also issued a statement following the incident. The president, who dropped out of the 2024 Presidential Race against Trump, commended the work of the Secret Service in keeping his former opponent safe.
"As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety," Biden stated.
Vice President and Trump's Democratic opponent Kamala Harris posted a statement on X reading, "I have been briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida, and I am glad he is safe. Violence has no place in America."
