Why will flags be flown at half-staff this weekend?

All U.S. and Florida state flags will be flown at half-staff starting at midnight on Saturday, Nov. 25.

TAMPA, Fla. — As families gather to give thanks this week, flags across the U.S. will be flown at half-staff in honor of one beloved American icon.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced in a news release on Wednesday that all flags of the United States and the state of Florida will be flown at half-staff starting at midnight on Saturday, Nov. 25, to remember the life and legacy of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

Per an order from President Biden, flags at all local and state buildings and installations will remain at half-staff until the former first lady is laid to rest.

Carter passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Nov. 19 at the age of 96, according to The Carter Center. She is survived by former President Carter, their four children Jack, Chip, Jeff and Amy and 22 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” former President Jimmy Carter said in a statement. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

Just two days prior to her passing, Carter had entered hospice care at home in Plains, Georgia. The family announced earlier this year that the former first lady had been diagnosed with dementia. Former President Carter, now 99, entered hospice care at home in February.

The Carter Center announced that services for Rosalynn will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 29. There also will be several memorial events leading up to her interment.
