'Fireball' streaks across sky over south Florida

A fireball is a very bright meteor, but the American Meteor Society said it's possible this was space debris burning up as it hit Earth's atmosphere.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Did you see it?  A very bright meteor, often called a fireball, streaked across the sky over Florida early Wednesday morning.

The American Meteor Society logged more than 20 reports from people who said they saw the fireball. Reports came in from Zephyrhills, Tampa and St. Petersburg as well as farther south like Fort Myers, West Palm Beach and even Key West.

The society later said the fireball was actually possible space debris burning up as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere. The organization said it suspects it was from the CZ-3B R/B satellite launched from China.

U.S. Strategic Command confirmed the object was a Chinese Rocket Body launched this year.

B. Boger shared this video with the Meteor Society of the object streaming across the sky around 2:17 a.m. near West Palm Beach.

One woman tweeted a video near the University of Tampa saying "meteor shower over Tampa Florida (or was it??)."
