'Keep the peace over spring break': More police expected in Miami Beach

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced increased law enforcement around the state ahead of spring break.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Florida is increasing law enforcement personnel across the state during spring break.

Popular spring break destinations such as Miami Beach, Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach will see a higher police presence, according to a press release.

DeSantis announced Tuesday that 140 state troopers will be deployed to assist 17 law enforcement agencies. Florida Highway Patrol will also activate 24 quick response troopers in Bay, Volusia, Broward and Dade counties to help respond to incidents.

“Florida may be popular for spring break, but it is inhospitable to criminal activity,” said DeSantis in a statement.

Some of the measures that will be taken in Miami Beach include:

  • Curfews
  • Security searches
  • Bag checks
  • Early beach closures
  • DUI checkpoints
  • Parking and lane closures
  • Increased patrols

“From mobilizing our resources quickly to conducting investigations to providing analytical research, we won’t let Florida fall victim to the chaos that other states have seen,” said Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass in a statement.

During spring break in 2023, Miami Beach saw two deadly shootings and over 400 arrests. The city is now trying a new approach, including an attempt to "break up" with spring break revelers, with increased security precautions.

"It's not us, it's you. We just want different things," an actor in the video said.
