Coast Guard rescues 5 after boat capsizes near Jacksonville

A boat and helicopter crew found the five men sitting on top of the flipped boat with life jackets on.

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — A Coast Guard crew rescued five people after their boat capsized on Sunday.

Jacksonville command center watchstanders received a 911 call from the sheriff's office at 10:15 a.m. about a 24-foot vessel capsized 11 miles off the shore of Mayport. A boat crew and helicopter crew went to rescue the five boaters, according to a news release.

When they got there, five people were sitting on top of the overturned boat wearing lifejackets. The rescue crews transported the men to Mayport Boat Ramp.

“While on the water, situations can become unpredictable and dangerous in an instant, so it's crucial to be prepared,” said Cmdr. Nick Barrow, Sector Jacksonville search and rescue mission coordinator. “Having life jackets for everyone aboard your vessel can help save lives by providing essential buoyancy and increasing visibility in the water. We appreciate the swift emergency communications relay with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office enabling a rapid response to the scene.”

None of the men were injured and the cause of what happened is under investigation. The weather conditions that day were reported to be 10-knot winds with three to four-foot waves, according to the release.
