MELBOURNE, Fla. — A man was killed and several others were hurt after a Brightline train collided with an SUV on Wednesday afternoon, the Melbourne Police Department told WKMG.
It happened on WH Jackson Street in Melbourne.
Brevard County Fire Rescue previously said two adults and a child were hurt while a fourth person had to be extracted from the SUV, WKMG reports. According to the news station, the driver 62-year-old Charles Julian Phillips, was killed.
In February 2023, two people were killed when their SUV was struck by a Brightline high-speed commuter train in South Florida. A pedestrian was hit and killed in an apparent suicide in September 2023.
At least 90 deaths have been connected to Brightline since it began operations in July 2017, running from West Palm Beach to Miami.
None of the deaths involving Brightline have been found to be the railroad’s fault. Most have been suicides, pedestrians who tried to run across the tracks ahead of a train or drivers who maneuvered around crossing gates rather than wait.
