FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Investigators said a small child grabbed a gun and accidentally shot his mother inside a car Thursday in Broward County.
Police say the 3-year-old boy got out of his car seat and grabbed his dad's legally-owned handgun, which had been placed under a seat before the father walked into a bank to cash a check. The boy then accidentally discharged the gun, hitting his mom in the leg.
The mom was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is stable.
The shooting happened around 1:45 p.m. in the corner of a shopping plaza on West Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. A 1-year-old girl was also in the car with the mom and little boy at the time.
Officers have opened an investigation.
