TAMPA, Fla. — Starting next month, you'll start to see a new Florida area code on phone calls.
The Florida Public Service Commission is rolling out a "324" area code on Feb. 26, 2024, for Nassau, Duval, Baker, Bradford, Clay, St. Johns and Union Counties.
That means anyone who currently has a "904" area code will receive a new "324" number when requesting a new service or an additional line.
And starting on Jan. 29, 2024, anyone with a "904" area code will need to begin 10-digit dialing, even for local calls, to prepare for the transition.
“Since August, permissive 10-digit dialing has been allowed. My hope is that residents and businesses have had plenty of time to reprogram contacts and equipment,” PSC Chairman Mike La Rosa said. “With the February launch of the new 324 area code quickly approaching, mandatory 10-digit dialing is necessary for two area codes to service popular Northeast Florida.”
Florida officials shared that the "324" area code is necessary because the "904" area code is running out of available numbers.
