ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Generous Tampa Bay Rays fans not only showed up to support their team Sunday, but many also brought an extra special gift to help strike out hunger in Tampa Bay.
10News, the Rays Wives and Feeding Tampa Bay hosted a “Cereal for Summer” collection ahead of Sunday’s afternoon games against the Yankees.
Anyone who brought a donation of cereal or other pre-packaged breakfast items received a voucher for two free tickets to an upcoming Rays game.
“It has snowballed year after year,” 10Community’s Kathryn Bursch said. “Last year we got in about 50,000 boxes of cereal. That is just mind blowing and of course, we want to break that!”
Feeding Tampa Bay collects the cereal to help meet the needs of school kids who might normally rely on free breakfast and lunch during the school year. The non-profit says when summer comes many of the kids go hungry.
“We don’t get a lot of cereal during the summer, so collecting in one giant group like this helps us spread it out over the summer,” said Karen Griffin of Feeding Tampa Bay.
Cereal Summer Collections will continue through the rest of this week at Bay area Publix locations.
