TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Republican-controlled Florida House is moving ahead with a new map for the state's 27 members of Congress.
The House on Tuesday voted 76 to 35 for a map that will upend the state's political landscape. Several incumbents would likely lose their seats if the map is adopted by the full Legislature and approved by Gov. Rick Scott.
Legislators are holding a rare August special session. The Florida Supreme Court in July threw out the existing map and gave legislators 100 days to adopt a new one.
Several House Republicans sharply criticized the court ruling. But House leaders said they needed to follow the ruling and put in a place a new map that complies with the decision.
But the House map that passed on Tuesday is not identical to one moving in the Florida Senate. The two sides have until Friday to reach an agreement.
