Road to election: Abortion expected to drive Florida voters to polls

Anti-abortion activists gathered Friday in St. Pete.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — With nearly 100 days until the November election, Florida voters are keeping an eye on more than just the presidential race.

Amendment 4 on the ballot could enshrine abortion rights in Florida's constitution.

A group of anti-abortion activists gathered on the 54th Avenue overpass on I-275 in St. Pete to get their message to those driving by as part of a nationwide movement.

"We want to communicate that life is precious and that it should be protected by love and by law in Florida," Scott Mahurin with Florida Preborn Rescue, Inc. said.

On top of the looming vote on the measure, they say their message "is more needed than ever," with Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democrat nominee against former President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, abortion rights activists in Florida are hoping the measure will get the required 60% approval from voters.

"What's at stake in November, is the ability for us to be able to make the decisions for ourselves," May Thach, the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum senior organizing manager, said.

Thach said the campaign to pass the amendment isn't about one political party, stressing the required number of signatures to put the measure on the ballot was surpassed from the beginning.

"For us, it's always been a grassroots campaign that we know that this is a campaign for the people and by the people," she said.

10 Tampa Bay political analyst Dr. Lars Hafner said the topic of abortion will not only energize a base of women voters, but men have also shown up to the voting booths in similar measures like in Ohio last year.

Hafner anticipates the abortion topic, along with other hot races including school boards, will energize voters of all views.

"I think people are going to pay close attention to this election, and the results should show a dramatic turnout," Hafner said.

Florida currently enacts one of the United States' most restrictive abortion bans, outlawing the procedure after six weeks with few exceptions including rape or incest up to 15 weeks.
