Who is Andrew Gillum? The 39-year-old Tallahassee mayor has been getting a whole lot of attention following his Democratic primary win in August.
Gillum is one step closer to becoming Florida's first black governor. He faces Republican Ron DeSantis in today's midterm general election.
Gillum had only just recently aired his first TV commercial when he won the nomination two months ago. Since then, he's garnered support and endorsements from high-profile political players like Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama.
Gillum, who became the youngest person ever elected to the Tallahassee city commission at age 23, also had an appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. The night before Tuesday's election, he had a rally at his alma mater Florida A&M University headlined by Sean "Diddy" Combs, Tiffany Haddish, DJ Khaled, Will Packer and Monica.
Gillum has become a household name since the primary election, and not just in Florida. He joins the likes of others energizing the left, Democratic base like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Beto O'Rourke of Texas.
He's been deemed a progressive like Ocasio-Cortez and O'Rourke and his political style is often compared to that of Sen. Sanders.
At his rallies, Gillum often speaks of his parents Charles and Frances Gillum, a construction worker and a bus driver, respectively, and his dedication to his family and serving Florida's workers.
Gillum was born in Miami and raised in Gainesville, then attended Florida A&M University for political science. Gillum also said he's the first person in his family to graduate college.
Gillum is married to fellow FAMU graduate R. Jai Howard and together they have three children.
