Ted Cruz defeats Beto O'Rourke for U.S. Senate seat in Texas

Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has defeated Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke in Texas, as Republicans keep control of the U.S. Senate.

O'Rourke, currently a U.S. representative, had been trying to become the first member of his party elected to a statewide office in the Lone Star State since 1994.

The race became unexpectedly close, and the candidates when dead even as of 9:45 p.m., according to CBS News.

But, network analysts have since projected Cruz will be reelected.

Cruz was the runner-up for the GOP nomination in the 2016 presidential election won by President Donald Trump.
