Incumbent Republican Sen. Rick Scott projected to win reelection to Florida US Senate seat, AP says

FLORIDA, USA — Republican incumbent Rick Scott is projected to win reelection to the U.S. Senate and defeat Democratic challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell in one of the most closely-watched races in Florida, according to the Associated Press.

Scott first took office in 2019 after narrowly defeating then-Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in the 2018 election.

During his time as senator, Scott has reportedly focused on issues including government spending, inflation, protecting Social Security and Medicare, the U.S. border and the military.

He was also a key sponsor in helping the End Fentanyl Act become law, requiring the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to “review and update, as necessary, manuals and policies related to inspections at ports of entry to ensure the uniformity of inspection practices to effectively detect illegal activity along the border, such as the smuggling of drugs and humans.”

Scott successfully ran for governor of Florida in 2010 and was reelected in 2014. According to his campaign website, Scott added more than 1.7 million jobs while he was governor and helped pass legislation that made it “harder for politicians to raise taxes and fees on families.”

Scott has been married to his high school sweetheart Ann since they were 19. Together, they have two daughters and seven grandchildren.
