TAMPA, Fla. — The 2024 Election is underway as millions of Americans head to the polls to decide who they want for the next president, along with other major federal, state and local races.
While voting polls close nationwide at 7 p.m., it may take beyond Election Day to find out who won the presidential race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Here's a look at when the last 20 years of presidential elections were called:
When was the 2020 election called?
In the most recent race between Trump, the incumbent nominee at the time, and President Joe Biden, the Associated Press officially called the race for the Democratic nominee at 11:26 a.m. E.T. Saturday, Nov. 7. That was four days following Election Day.
On that day, AP reported Biden had won Pennsylvania and Nevada. The day before, AP called the results for 11 states, including Florida, and the 2nd Congressional District in Maine.
When was the 2016 election called?
In contrast with 2020, the 2016 election was called only hours after polls closed, with Trump being declared the winner at 2:29 a.m. E.T. Wednesday, Nov. 8.
In the hours leading into Trump's victory, the last few states to be called were Iowa, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Maine and Wisconsin, with four of those states going to the former president.
When was the 2012 election called?
In the race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, election results came in on Election Day at 11:38 p.m. E.T. Tuesday, Nov. 6.
The race was called when former President Obama won Colorado, allowing him to exceed the necessary 270 electoral votes needed to win.
Following Obama's declared victory, races were still being called into the next day in Wisconsin, Nevada, Virginia, Montana and Alaska.
When was the 2008 election called?
According to CBS News, at around 11 p.m. E.T. Tuesday, Nov. 4 on Election Day, former Senator Obama was elected as the first Black President of the United States after defeating late Senator John McCain.
Following the announcement of Obama's victory, 11 states were still awaiting official results, seven of which went to the then President-Elect.
When was the 2004 election called?
The 2004 race for the White House went to then-incumbent President George W. Bush after Democratic nominee John Kerry conceded the election at around 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3.
The only state left to be called following Kerry's concession speech was Nevada, which was called for Bush at 11:34 a.m. E.T.
