ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a $116.5 billion budget into law on Wednesday while also vetoing nearly $950 million in spending.
In his 39-page veto letter, the governor said, "Governments should strive to do more with less. It can be done, and my action today cements that lesson for the nation."
Some of the vetoed items included $26 million for cultural and museum grants, according to The News Service of Florida. St. Petersburg's Dali Museum will lose out on $500,000 in funding for an educational outreach program.
The city also lost $550,000 for a shoreline revitalization project in North Shore Park. In Tampa, the Palmetto Beach neighborhood will not get a $1 million project meant to combat sea level rise along its coast.
In total for the Tampa Bay region, the governor vetoed about $58,000,000 worth of local infrastructure projects like roadway and government building improvements, about $10,000,000 for community resources like non-profits and rehabilitation centers and roughly $30,000,000 in environmental projects like water quality and shoreline improvements.
The budget will take effect at the start of the new fiscal year, July 1.
