TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Concealed weapons license carriers normally have to make an appointment or wait in line for renewal.
According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services website, Firearm licenses may now be renewed online. As long as all of the qualifications listed under the Florida Statute for a Concealed Weapon or Firearm license are met, the license holder can renew the license from a desktop.
In order to renew the license online, the permit holder must have the following:
- The mail notification of the renewal
- A recent digital or passport-style photo taken in the last month
- An editing tool specified for the United States Department of State
- A form of electronic payment
Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam made the announcement on Wednesday.
“My goal is to make applying for or renewing a Florida concealed weapon license as convenient as possible, and this new online feature gives license holders another option when renewing,” he said in a press release on Wednesday.
In 2017, over 204,000 will need to renew their concealed weapon license.
Currently, there are 1.6 million active weapon license in Florida.
President of the Florida League of Women Voters, Pamela Goodman, voiced her opinion saying the online renewal is an “unconscionable action” which reinforces a lack of mandatory training for concealed weapon owners.
License holders can still renew a concealed weapons license through the mail, as well as at 41 Tax Collectors Offices across the state or at one of the Department of Agriculture’s eight regional offices in Doral, Fort Walton, Jacksonville, North Port, Orlando, Tallahassee, Tampa and West Palm Beach.
