MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Andrew Gillum, the former Florida gubernatorial candidate, is launching a voter registration campaign to defeat President Donald Trump in 2020.
Politico reported the details of Gillum’s “major announcement” early Wednesday. Gillum made the formal announcement Wednesday evening in Miami Gardens.
Gillum told a crowd his goal is to register 1 million new voters before the 2020 presidential election. He said he wants to deny President Donald Trump a second term "right here in Florida."
The news outlet said a group working with Gillum, Bring it Home Florida, was registered last week with the state’s election division overseeing third-party voter organizations.
Rumors have swirled since Gillum lost that the former Tallahassee mayor would join other Democrats in running for president in 2020. For now, he appears focused on increasing voters in his home state, Politico said.
Politico said the Florida Democratic Party says it will spend $2 million in the next year to register some 200,000 voters before the 2020 presidential primary.
Gillum lost to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in the November election. In January, he joined CNN as a political contributor.
Gillum also teased his announcement on Twitter.
