Hank Barlas still eats hot dogs two to three times per week.
Even after all these years, the proprietor of the Coney Island Grill still loves going to work.
"His dad opened the business and it's just part of his life," said restaurant manager Gail Kelley. "It's the only thing that keeps him going."
In 1926, the hot dog spot opened up in downtown St. Petersburg. The regulars continue to flock to the bar stools to order $2.50 franks and to chat with the guy who is still going strong at 80 years old.
"He's a great guy," said 96-year old Polly Pentz. "You should eat these hot dogs every chance you get."
Barlas and his brother took over the business after their father passed away in 1983. On Monday, friends from decades passed came back to the familiar brick walls and welcoming diner-style countertops at Coney Island to celebrate Barlas' birthday in style.
"I wouldn't have missed this for nothing," said Don Davis, who was two years behind Barlas in high school. "I've been coming in here since the '40s."
The Coney Island staff bought Barlas an alarm clock for his birthday. He got a kiss on the cheek from a young girl and hugs from old friends.
It was the perfect way to celebrate in a place that has meant so much for so long to Barlas.
"Overwhelming," he said. "It's surprising. I didn't expect this.
"We have the best customers in the world. It's one of the reasons I'm still here."
Coney Island Grill is located at 250 9th St. N. in St. Petersburg.
