WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. -- We’re happy to announce New River Elementary as our 10News School the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
Over the past few weeks, our 10schools@wtsp.com inbox overflowed with nominations from parents, teachers and staff raving about the culture of this school. The common thread found throughout the nominations is the school creates a family atmosphere. It’s one of the reasons faculty and staff stay as long as they do at New River Elementary. Principal Sarah Bordner is a former teacher at the school as well.
Reading is a big deal at the school. Along with the daily 30 minutes of reading, the students are rewarded for reading the books listed on the Sunshine State Readers list. If students read all 15 books at the end of the year, they participate in a sleepover at the school. Last year alone 40 students earned the achievement.
As if that wasn’t impressive enough, the students logged more than a million reading minutes this past summer. Add in the Creativity Workshop and the school earning the 2017-2018 Florida PBIS Model School distinction, and it’s easy to see how everyone is #Committed2Success and why New River Elementary is our 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida.
If you have a recommendation for 10News School of the Week powered by Duke Energy Florida, email us the name of the school and tell us why they should be featured to 10schools@wtsp.com. We’re looking for elementary, middle and high schools.
