MIMS, Fla. (AP) - The Cape Canaveral National Cemetery is set to begin accepting burial applications.
Applications will be accepted starting Monday. The next of kin, or funeral home officials acting on behalf of a family, may request burial for eligible veterans at the national cemetery.
Burial in a national cemetery is open to veterans from all branches of the armed forces who meet the minimum active duty service requirements and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Spouses, minor children and under certain circumstances adult children with disabilities may also be eligible for burial.
Construction on the 318-acre cemetery began in March. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs purchased the land in 2012 for $2.1 million.
A public dedication ceremony is planned later this year prior to the first burials.
