TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — People who get frustrated with drivers illegally passing stopped school buses will likely rejoice if a new bill is passed.
State Rep. Emily Slosberg filed the Florida Senate bill which would allow school districts to not only install cameras on buses but would also allow law enforcement to cite drivers for failing to stop for school buses.
The cameras would be installed on the buses to take photos of the drivers' license plates.
Violators would then be mailed citations that demand payment. The state would also be allowed to impose civil penalties on drivers. That is unless the driver is able to provide "established" information to fight or appeal the citation.
The bill currently lives in the House and has been referred to the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee, and the State Affairs Committee.
